Building Systems

Traditional Concrete, Block, Modular Block & Steel Rebar

Concrete block whether traditional or time & cost saving Modular Block Sytems, has been used as a modern building material for a long time in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Concrete blocks are fabricated using the tried and true formula consisting of Portland cement and different aggregates such as stone or quartz, and water. The inclusion of steel rebar in this process along with good local mason knowledge of laying block and mixing concrete, continue to make this process popular but not the most “Green” building system. Pros

• When they're assembled and built correctly, concrete blocks are ideal for foundations and basement walls because they're stronger than poured concrete.
• Partition walls in any home can be put up quickly using concrete blocks, and their cores or voids can be filled with steel reinforcing rods and concrete for additional strength.
• Accoustic Rating is high in a dense concrete block wall or floor, meaning sound waves do not carry well through finished walls.
• Concrete block is unaffected by termites or extreme temperatures and is virtually soundproof.
• Most of local construction labor force is proficient with building system.

A very popular and trending building system is the use of light steel structural framing and fiber cement skins with optional insulation such as spray on close cell foam, fiberglass or reflective materials. Light Steel construction is considered a “Green” building system because it produces lees construction waste and all materials are 100% recyclable.
